Why We're Here

Helping Every Child Discover They Can Play Hockey

Making hockey accessible across the Northern Rivers.

Every child deserves the chance to Try, Play, and Belong.

But across the Northern Rivers, access to sport isn’t always equal. Distance, cost, and limited local opportunities can prevent children from getting involved.

Access to sport should not be limited by:

  • where a child lives
  • financial circumstances
  • ability or experience
  • personal or social challenges
  • cultural background

Hockey Events exists to change that.

By bringing hockey directly into schools and communities, we create accessible, inclusive and affordable opportunities for young people to experience the benefits of team sport.

Because every child deserves the opportunity to try, play, and belong.

⭐ BRIDGING THE GAPS

How We Bridge the Gaps

Hockey Events is designed to make it easier for children to access and enjoy team sport — regardless of their experience, confidence, or circumstances.

We do this by delivering hockey in ways that remove common barriers and create a supportive starting point for every child.

🏫 Bringing Hockey Into Schools

We deliver regular hockey programs directly within schools, allowing children to learn the sport at a grassroots level alongside their classmates and friends.

By introducing hockey in a familiar and supportive environment, we help reduce the hesitation and anxiety that can come with trying something new for the first time.

🤝 Creating a Fair & Inclusive Environment

Schools naturally provide a setting where participation is equal and inclusive. We build on this environment to ensure all children feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged to be involved.

🏑 Building Community Through Inter-School Sport

We create opportunities for schools to come together through friendly inter-school games and events.

This helps children:

  • expand their social connections
  • experience team sport in a broader setting
  • feel part of a wider community

🎯 Flexible & Accessible Participation

Our programs are designed to be accessible without the pressure of long-term commitment.

Families can choose to participate in a way that suits them, allowing children to try hockey without the expectation of ongoing involvement.

💰 Keeping Costs Manageable

We aim to keep programs as affordable as possible and offer flexible payment options, including:

  • weekly payment options

  • staged or time-to-pay arrangements

  • use of available support programs where applicable

This helps ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation.

A Simple Pathway Into Sport

By combining school-based programs, flexible participation, and community opportunities, Hockey Events creates a clear and accessible pathway into team sport.

For many children, this is where they first realise:

They can take part. They can improve. They belong.

⭐OUR PATHWAY

Our Hockey Development Pathway

Hockey Events provides a simple and supportive pathway for children to experience, learn, and continue in the sport — at their own pace.

Whether a child is trying hockey for the first time or looking to develop their skills further, our programs are designed to guide them every step of the way.

🏫 School Introduction Programs

Where it all begins

We deliver introductory hockey sessions directly within schools, giving children the opportunity to learn basic skills in a fun, familiar, and inclusive environment.

There is no experience required — just a willingness to have a go.

🏑 Community Training Programs

Building confidence and skills

Children who enjoy the sport can continue through optional after-school  or community-based training sessions.

These programs focus on:

  • skills and game understanding

  • confidence and independence

  • teamwork and enjoyment

All delivered in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

🛤 Club & Competition Pathways

Connecting to the wider hockey community

For those who wish to continue, we help connect players with local hockey clubs and competitions across the Northern Rivers.

This allows children to:

  • become part of a team
  • experience structured competition

  • build long-term friendships with sport.

A Pathway Without Pressure

Not every child will choose to continue into club sport — and that’s okay.

Hockey Events is about creating positive first experiences, where children feel:

  • confident to try

  • supported to learn

  • free to continue at their own pace

From First Touch to Team Player

For many participants, this pathway represents more than just sport.

It’s the beginning of:

  • confidence

  • connection

  • belonging

All starting with a simple introduction at school.

⭐ WHY TEAM SPORT MATTERS

Why Team Sport Matters

For children, sport is about far more than learning how to play a game.

It’s about building confidence, forming friendships, and feeling part of something bigger than themselves.

Through team sport, children develop:

  • confidence and self-belief

  • communication and teamwork skills

  • resilience and independence

  • strong social connections

These experiences often shape how children see themselves — not just in sport, but in life.

A Unique Role in the Northern Rivers

Across the Northern Rivers, communities are spread across coastal towns, hinterland villages, and rural areas.

Team sport plays an important role in bringing children together beyond their immediate school environment, helping them connect with others and feel part of a wider community.

For many children, sport becomes a place where they:

  • make new friends

  • feel a sense of belonging

  • gain confidence in social settings

More Than Just Physical Activity

While sport supports physical health and fitness, its impact goes much further.

Children who participate in team sport also benefit from:

  • improved mental wellbeing

  • increased confidence in trying new challenges

  • stronger relationships with peers

  • a positive outlet for energy and expression

Where It All Begins

For many children, that first introduction to sport is the most important.

A positive early experience can shape their confidence and willingness to stay active for years to come.

That’s why Hockey Events focuses on creating supportive, enjoyable, and pressure-free introductions to team sport.

A Simple First Step

Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity.

One session.
One team.
One moment of confidence.

And everything can change from there.

Inter-School Challenge

With School Fundraising Opportunities

Our 3rd Phase of the Primary School initiative, is to create opportunities for competition between the schools involved.

Bringing 3 or 4 schools together on a weekday evening for competitive hockey challenge, is exciting for the kids who have been training throughout the programs, and also allows involvement for parents and family.

With one school hosting this event at a time, it creates an opportunity to fundraise with a simple BBQ selling Sausage sandwiches, drinks, ice-blocks, etc.

This provides children to connect with others outside their immediate school zones, and interaction with outside groups through healthy activity.
